Glass broken tonight in Fremantle: what should I do?

Keep people and pets away, leave loose shards in the frame and call 000 if anyone is hurt or a crime is in progress. Then send a request and say if the opening isn't secure.

Typical situations are a High Street shop window smashed overnight, a pane broken in a break-in, or door glass cracked by a gust. Report a past crime to WA Police on 131 444, and take photos before anything is moved.

West End heritage rules for windows and shopfronts

The West End, Fremantle's original 1829 town centre around High Street, was permanently added to the State Register of Heritage Places on 18 July 2017. The City of Fremantle's West End Heritage Area policy (LPP 3.21) says traditional shopfronts on High and Market streets are to be retained, that both gold-rush timber frames and interwar art deco metal frames are significant, and that removing transoms from shopfronts won't be supported. New windows should match the colour, finish, width and opening size of traditional West End windows. The City's exemptions policy adds that works to a heritage-protected place need development approval unless specifically exempted. If a repair would change a frame or shopfront rather than just the glass, check with the City first.

Homes and glass in Fremantle & Cockburn

Fremantle has convict-built structures and hundreds of gold-rush-era buildings, so you will find old timber sashes, patterned glass and leadlight here. Glazewell notes heritage or patterned glass may need to be sourced specially, and hipages notes timber sashes cost more to reglaze than aluminium. If your building is heritage-listed, say so on the form; the glazier decides what glass suits. Newer Cockburn estates have more typical aluminium sliders.

Shops and commercial glass

Fremantle's cafés, shops and old warehouses have big street-facing windows. Bibra Lake, in the City of Cockburn, has an industrial and business area. For a broken commercial window, see shopfront glass repair.

Can leadlight or heritage glass be matched?

Sometimes, but it takes longer. Glazewell says heritage or period glass may need to be sourced specially. Tell us it is leadlight or heritage glass on the form, and the glazier will tell you what's possible.

Is Coogee covered?

Yes. Coogee, Bibra Lake and Beaconsfield are on this page. Your request goes to one local glazing business that services the area.

Can you promise a repair tonight?

No. Our referral team calls you back and puts you in touch with a local glazier, who tells you whether and when they can attend. We don't set or promise times, after hours or otherwise.
