Perth Glazier Pros is a referral service, not a glazier. Requests go to one local glazing business that services your area (how it works).
Short answer: AS 1288:2021 sets how glass is selected and installed in Australian buildings. When old non-safety glass in a door breaks, industry guidance is to replace it with Grade A safety glass. Which glass a particular spot needs is the glazier's call. We don't publish dimension rules from the standard, because we haven't bought it.
What is AS 1288?
AS 1288 is the Australian Standard for selecting and installing glass in buildings. The current edition is AS 1288:2021, published on 25 June 2021. It is a 174-page technical standard sold by Standards Australia, and glaziers use it to choose the right glass for each location.
Which parts of a home does AS 1288 cover for safety?
Its human-impact section (Section 5) deals with glass people could run or fall into. The table of contents lists doors, side panels beside doors, low-level glazing in homes, external shopfronts, bathroom and ensuite glazing, and leadlights.
We have only seen the standard's table of contents, not its text, so we don't repeat its measurements here.
Does my old glass have to be upgraded?
Generally not. AGWA's fact sheet notes legislation is generally not retrospective, so existing glass isn't automatically required to meet the current standard. The question comes up when a pane breaks and is replaced.
Can a broken pane be replaced like for like?
Not always. AGWA recommends that a broken non-safety pane in a sliding door is replaced with Grade A safety glass, and that the glazier tells the owner in writing if the other pane doesn't meet current standards.
That is why a quote for an older sliding door can come back higher than you expect: the replacement pane is safety glass even if the broken one wasn't. See glass door repair.
How do I know if glass is safety glass?
AS 1288 has a clause on identifying safety glass (listed in Section 5 of its contents). We haven't reproduced its wording here. The simplest step is to ask the glazier to check what you have before quoting a like-for-like replacement.
Does safety glass cost more?
Yes. Glazewell, a Perth glazier, publishes $280–$450 for a clear float pane, $380–$650 for toughened and $450–$900 for laminated, supplied and installed. Glazewell notes toughened glass is code-required for low-level windows and glass near doors.
| Glass type | Per pane, supplied & installed (Glazewell) | Glass only, per m² (hipages) |
|---|---|---|
| Clear float glass | $280–$450 | $38–$46 per m² |
| Toughened glass | $380–$650 | about $230 per m² |
| Laminated glass | $450–$900 | about $403 per m² |
| Low-E glass | $450–$800 | about $288 per m² |
| Double-glazed unit | $600–$1,400 | about $265 per m² |
What we don't claim
We don't claim any certification under AS 1288 for this site or for any business we refer to. Ask the glazing business what glass they will fit and why.
